Plomberie Anjou

Water supply to your building

Water service line replacement and repair

Water near the foundation, reduced flow throughout the building or an aging supply line? Before recommending water service line replacement, Plomberie Anjou assesses the service pipe and indoor shutoff to clarify the work your property needs.

The pipe material, access and affected section determine the scope of a service line project. A short conversation helps establish the right starting point.

What changed?

Useful clues before any digging begins

A symptom alone does not locate a break. Note where it appears and when it began. An assessment helps distinguish a service line problem from an issue with interior plumbing or the municipal supply.

  • Water at the entry point or near the foundationSeepage or a dripping connection should be checked promptly. If water is flowing actively, call right away.
  • Less water flow at several fixturesTell us whether the change affects cold water, hot water or the entire building. The service pipe is only one possible cause.
  • A main shutoff valve that will not close properlyA leaking or seized valve may require a separate repair without replacing the buried line.
  • A notice about the service line materialKeep the municipal letter and any records you have. They help identify the section involved.

Scope of work

Water service line replacement or a targeted repair?

The answer depends on the section affected and the condition of the installation. Water service line repair, an indoor valve replacement and a full private-line replacement are different projects.

INDOOR PLUMBING

Connection or main shutoff valve

A leak or blockage may be close to the point where water enters the building. We check access, the connection and how the supply can be shut off before defining the repair.

PRIVATE SERVICE LINE

Repairing a section of pipe

If the pipe between the property line and the building is affected, its route and the damaged section must be established. Access and any excavation work can then be planned around the actual problem.

PLANNED PROJECT

Installation or replacement

Water service line installation or replacement of an aging pipe calls for a clear scope: material, length, connection and municipal requirements should be reviewed before work is proposed.

A leaking valve does not automatically mean the entire service line must be replaced. Likewise, a new valve will not fix a damaged pipe underground.

Lead service lines

Received a replacement notice? Check which section it covers

In Montréal, a water service line has public and private sections. The City says the private portion must be replaced if it is made of lead. When certain public-side work is planned, the City may also replace the private lead section and bill the property owner. Read the City’s explanation of responsibilities.

The pipe visible in a basement may not reveal the material along its entire underground route. Share any notice or records before planning the job. The City also explains how to check a lead water service line and where to find its service-line map.

Anjou and Greater Montréal

Know who handles each part of the work

In Anjou and other Montréal boroughs, requests to locate or shut off the exterior service box go through the borough. Timing and procedures vary by location. Work on a buried connection or near public property may also require a permit, depending on the scope.

Plomberie Anjou takes water supply requests in Montréal, on the North Shore and on the South Shore. For properties outside Montréal, confirm the local municipality’s requirements for the job address.

From the first call to the work

A decision based on access and the affected section

  1. 1
    Describe the issue

Give us the address, any leak or drop in flow, the entry point and a municipal notice if you have one.

  2. 2
    Assess the installation

The assessment distinguishes the indoor valve and connections, the private service pipe and signs of an exterior problem.

  3. 3
    Define the work

The proposed scope considers material, access, length and any approvals or other trades needed for work beyond the building.

  4. 4
    Arrange the water shutoff

When a municipal shutoff is needed, it must be scheduled before the work. Final checks take place before water service is restored.

Common questions

Before repairing your water service line

Does low water pressure mean the service line needs replacement?

No. If several fixtures are affected, the cause could be the shutoff valve, private service line, interior plumbing or municipal supply. The source should be identified before replacing a pipe.

Can the main shutoff valve be replaced on its own?

Sometimes. A faulty indoor valve can be a separate job if the rest of the line is sound. The work may require an appropriate water shutoff for the installation.

Who shuts off the exterior service box in Montréal?

The borough handles the exterior shutoff. The building owner or their representative may request it under the local procedure. Check your borough’s instructions before setting a work date.

Is a permit needed to replace the private section?

Requirements depend on the location, excavation and connections being changed. Montréal lists borough-specific conditions for service-connection work; review the City’s guidance for your project.
