The first decision

Keep the fixtures where they are or change the layout?

The scope of renovation plumbing depends largely on what needs to move behind the walls and below the floor.

01

Replace in the same location

A new vanity, toilet or kitchen sink may be able to use the existing layout. The exposed shutoff valves, connections and pipe sections still need to be checked before they are covered again.

  • Confirm the new fixture dimensions.
  • Locate the shutoffs and drain before ordering finishes.
02

Move or add a fixture

A reoriented shower, double vanity or relocated sink calls for a closer look at supply routes, drainage and plumbing venting. Access through the floor and walls may shape what is feasible.

  • Share both the current layout and the proposed one.
  • Schedule the plumbing rough-in before the walls close.

A useful first step: confirm fixture locations and selected models before cabinetry, drywall or tile sets the final dimensions.

Rooms with plumbing

Renovation plumbing shaped by the room

A new layout may reuse some connections while changing others. An assessment helps identify which is which.

Bathroom

Bathroom renovation plumbing can include moving a toilet or sink, preparing a shower, connecting a bathtub and replacing pipe sections uncovered during the renovation.

Kitchen

Kitchen renovation plumbing needs to account for the new sink, cabinets, accessible shutoff valves and, where relevant, a dishwasher connection. For an island sink, the drainage route should be reviewed before the layout is finalized.

Laundry room or basement

Adding a laundry sink or changing washer connections means checking the supply, drain and available space. In a basement, the existing drainage arrangement also matters.

These services cover plumbing work. Structural plans, electrical work and finishing should be arranged with the appropriate trades for your project.

Plan the sequence

Rough-in before the walls close, connections after finishing

A renovation has two key plumbing moments: when pipes are exposed and when the new fixtures are ready to connect.

STEP 01

Set the layout

Compare the existing and proposed fixtures, review the dimensions of selected models and identify where the pipes can be accessed.

STEP 02

Prepare the pipes

Adjust water supply and drainage for the agreed layout, then check the connections while they remain visible.

STEP 03

Connect the fixtures

Once finishes are in place, install and connect the planned fixtures, then check operation and accessible connections for leaks.

Before defining the work

What the existing system may change

A room plan shows the result you want. The plumbing already in place determines which changes are practical and what access the work will need.

Found a leak during demolition? Address it before closing the surfaces. See water leak repair.

Condition of existing pipes

An old or poorly placed section may be easier to address while the wall is open. The decision depends on its actual condition and the available access.

Drain and vent access

The position of the stack, branch drains and floor affects plans to move a shower, toilet or sink.

Condo or occupied building

A water shutoff or work involving common elements may require coordination with the condo syndicate or property manager. Check the applicable permissions before fixing the schedule.

Local guidance · Anjou

Moving a fixture? Check the renovation permit requirements.

Anjou’s borough guidance says a permit application is required to move or add a plumbing fixture. Montréal does not issue a separate permit for interior plumbing work, but the renovation itself may need borough authorization depending on what changes.

Before settling on a new location, ask Anjou’s permit counter about your project. Plumbing work must also meet Québec’s provincial requirements for the appropriate contractor licence.

Common questions

Before the renovation starts

A few answers to help plan the plumbing before fixture locations are locked in.

When should the plumber be involved?

As soon as you are considering fixture locations, especially if a toilet, shower or sink will move. An initial assessment can check possible routes. The rough-in takes place while pipes are accessible, before the walls close.

Can a toilet or shower be relocated?

It needs an on-site assessment. Drain location, plumbing venting, structure and floor access shape what can be changed. Choosing a new fixture alone does not establish whether the move is feasible.

Will I need a permit in Anjou?

Anjou’s guidance says a permit application is required when moving or adding a plumbing fixture. Other layout changes may also need approval. See the borough’s specific guidance (in French) and ask the Anjou permit counter about your plans.

Can you work alongside my renovation contractor?

Yes. Share your schedule and any available plans. Plumbing visits should be coordinated with the opening and closing of surfaces and the installation of new fixtures.

What affects the scope of the plumbing work?

The number of fixtures, how far they move, access to the pipes, the condition of the existing system and work already planned all matter. Photos and a sketch of both layouts make the first conversation more useful.
