Where to start

When should you call a Downtown Montreal plumber?

An address in central Montreal may lead to a home, a business or a shared building area. Start with where the symptom appears. That location alone may not reveal the source of the problem.

Inside the unit

Condo or apartment

Tell us which fixture is affected, the floor, when the water appears and which shutoff valves you can reach. If water seems to be moving through a ceiling or wall, also alert building management.

Shared space

Common piping or service room

A shutoff may affect more than one occupant. Identify who can provide access to service rooms, other floors or neighbouring spaces and who can coordinate with the building.

Working premises

Office or retail space

Describe the affected fixtures and how the problem interrupts use. Tell us when the premises and water connections can be accessed. The visit can then be discussed around the issue and site constraints.

You do not have to identify the faulty pipe. A photo, the exact place where the symptom appears and the contact who can open the space are enough to start the conversation.

Active leak or overflow

Limit the water, then coordinate access

If you can safely close an accessible shutoff valve that works normally, turn off the supply to the affected fixture. Do not force a stuck valve. Stay away from areas where water could reach electrical equipment.

If the water keeps flowing, reaches another floor or threatens an occupied space, call. Tell us what you were able to shut off and who can contact building management or open another room. The necessary repair is determined after an on-site assessment.

Call about an urgent problem

Where is the water showing?

Room, unit, floor, ceiling or floor surface; say whether it is still flowing.

What can be shut off?

Tell us which valves have been closed and whether other fixtures are affected.

Who can let us in?

Concierge, property manager, owner or business contact, depending on the building.

Common requests

Choose the service by the symptom

We start with the condition of the accessible piping and fixtures. These service pages explain possible work without assuming that every building needs the same repair.

Water supply

Water leak repair

A connection, faucet, visible pipe or spreading damp patch needs its source located before the affected section can be repaired.

Blocked drain and drain cleaning

A sink, toilet or floor drain that backs up can put a room out of use. Tell us which fixtures are affected and whether the symptoms happen together.

When the shutoff extends beyond your space

Water service line and connections: who should you contact?

An indoor unit repair, a building-wide shutoff and work on the exterior water service valve are different situations. The shutoff needed should be checked before arranging an interruption affecting others.

Exterior water service shutoff

If an indoor shutoff is not enough and the exterior water service valve must be operated, the City of Montréal says only the borough’s public works team can do so. The building owner or their representative requests the service and must be on site for the operation.

These city resources explain municipal procedures. The condition of the building’s plumbing still needs to be assessed on site.

Before the visit

Questions about plumbing in a downtown building

The answers depend on the actual shutoff points and access. These details can help you request service without having to diagnose the problem yourself.

Water is showing on my ceiling. Will the plumber need the unit above?

Not necessarily. Water may travel before becoming visible. Note where and when the mark appears, then contact building management if another unit or shared space might need to be opened. Call promptly if water is still flowing.

I manage a business. What should I report about a blocked drain?

Tell us which fixtures drain slowly, whether anything is backing up, which room is affected and when someone can provide access. If several fixtures are affected, mention that during the call so the drainage issue can be assessed accordingly.

Can the plumber shut off the exterior water valve?

The City of Montréal says that its borough public works teams operate exterior water service valves. The owner or their representative coordinates the request with the city. An accessible indoor valve may allow a more limited shutoff, depending on the installation.

Should I arrange access to the service room before calling?

If the equipment to check is there or a shared shutoff may be required, ask the building contact how access is arranged. You can still call with the address, symptoms and access you know about; we can discuss what needs to be checked.
