How much does a plumber cost in Montreal? To prepare a realistic budget, look at the full service visit: the service call, travel, labour, parts and equipment. An hourly rate alone does not tell you what you will pay.
This guide presents indicative cost ranges for plumbing work and explains their limits. It covers drain cleaning, camera inspections, installed water heaters and sump pumps. The aim is to help you understand an estimate and compare offers for equivalent work.
Sources were reviewed on October 3, 2026. All amounts are in Canadian dollars. The table excludes equipment-only prices and low installation prices presented without their service fees. The ranges come from documented examples; they are not statistical market averages.
Plumbing costs: general ranges by type of work
Read the inclusions and exclusions beside each amount. A job may cost more when it takes longer, access is difficult, different equipment is needed, or the visit takes place outside regular business hours. The lower figure is not a starting price offered by Plomberie Anjou, and the upper figure is not a price cap.
| Work or charge | Indicative range | Scope and fees to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Service call and travel | Confirm the charge separately | Does not automatically include the first hour of work. Ask about the minimum labour charge as well. |
| Plumber’s labour | Confirm the rate and billing minimum | Regular hours, crew size, diagnosis and premiums: ask for the complete billing formula before the visit. |
| Unclogging a kitchen sink, bathroom sink or toilet | About $400 to $700† | Rounded reference including the service fee identified by the source. Confirm specialized equipment and parts separately. [2] |
| Clearing the main drain or removing roots | About $600 to $1,200† | Examples of cable clearing or root removal, with travel taken into account. Camera work, repairs and excavation are separate. [2] [3] |
| Camera inspection with a report or locating service | About $500 to $1,000† | Scope varies: a pre-purchase report, several branches, or locating a defect from the surface. Confirm any preliminary drain clearing and emergency fees. [4] |
| Hydro jetting or high-pressure drain cleaning | About $700 to $1,000 before tax | Rounded reference for documented configurations: a standalone service or a combination with a camera inspection and report. Transport is included in the calculation; complex work costs extra. [3] |
| Repairing an accessible leak | About $400 to $600†, plus extras | The service fee is added to the published repair example. Parts, specialized equipment, access openings and finishing still need to be priced. [2] |
| Toilet installation | About $400 to $600†, excluding the toilet | Installation reference including the service fee. Add the toilet, any modifications and other supplies. [2] |
| 40- or 60-gallon electric water heater | About $1,300 to $1,700† for a basic replacement | Example including the tank, labour and service fee. Difficult access, modifications and electrical work can increase the total substantially. [2] |
| Replacing a pump in an existing sump pit | Price depends on the model and connections | Compare a complete replacement, including travel and testing. The purchase price of the pump is not the total bill. |
| Installing a sump pump system | About $1,500 to $4,000† | Installation examples depend on the pit, connections and discharge arrangement. Confirm concrete and electrical work. [7] [18] |
| Sump pump system with battery backup | About $2,800 to $4,800† | Published example for a system with backup, not simply the purchase of a battery. Confirm the equipment models and scope. [18] |
| Backwater valve installation | Project-specific quote required | Under a slab, locating the pipe, making openings, connecting the valve and restoring surfaces prevent the valve’s purchase price from representing the total. [8] |
| Sewer repair or replacement with excavation | About $5,000 to $18,000† | Published range for this work, depending on depth and access. Confirm length, permits and surface restoration. [4] |
† At least one source used for the range does not clearly state how taxes are treated; this must be confirmed. Rounded amounts indicate an order of magnitude, not an advertised package. Work outside the described examples needs its own estimate. See the methodology at the end of the article.
A useful approach: ask for the expected cost of the entire visit, then have additional work priced and approved before it begins. A price in a guide never replaces the terms agreed for your service.

Plumber hourly rates in Montreal: budget for the complete visit
The hourly rate and service call are separate charges
To understand the cost of a plumber per hour, ask about both the labour rate and the fees associated with the visit. A service call may cover travel, dispatch or part of the diagnosis. It does not necessarily include an hour of repairs.
Check the minimum billable time too. A repair that takes twenty minutes does not automatically produce a twenty-minute labour bill. The company may charge a labour minimum in addition to the service call, or offer a flat rate that combines certain items.
The useful question is: “What should I budget for travel and the first billable period of work, before parts and taxes?” Then ask when billable time starts, how additional time is rounded, and whether diagnosis is included in the labour charge.
Why the CMMTQ reference rate is not your plumber’s rate
The CMMTQ publishes reference hourly rates based on cost assumptions. These provide a comparison tool; they do not set every company’s retail prices. Materials, specialized equipment and certain job-specific charges must be considered separately. [1]
A billed rate covers more than wages: employment costs, vehicles, tools, insurance and business operations also contribute. Quoting a reference rate on its own can therefore give an incomplete picture of what a visit to your property will cost.
An illustration of how the charges add up
The following assumptions are used only to demonstrate the calculation. They are neither market averages nor Plomberie Anjou’s rates. Suppose a service call costs $150 to $200, with labour charged separately at $150 to $200 per hour.
| Illustration | Example calculation | Before parts and taxes |
|---|---|---|
| One billable hour and one service call | $150 to $200 + $150 to $200 | $300 to $400 |
| Two billable hours and one service call | $150 to $200 + 2 × $150 to $200 | $450 to $600 |
This illustration shows why an hourly rate cannot be treated as the price of a complete repair. Parts, specialized equipment, additional trips and finishing work may still be added. Replace these assumptions with the actual amounts confirmed by the contractor.
Emergency plumber costs: confirm the premium
The cost of an emergency plumber depends partly on the time, day and billing method. Some providers publish a higher hourly rate; others add a fixed emergency fee to the visit. Those two models are not interchangeable. [2] [3]
Before the visit, ask about the minimum charge, the premium, and the amount payable if you decline the repair after diagnosis. Check the crew rate when two people are needed. Ranges for scheduled work should not automatically be applied to nights, weekends or statutory holidays.
Include taxes in the budget
According to Revenu Québec, 5% GST and 9.975% QST are calculated on the same before-tax price. When both taxes apply, multiplying the subtotal by 1.14975 provides a useful budgeting figure. For example, a hypothetical $1,500 subtotal becomes approximately $1,724.63. Final rounding follows the invoice. [9]
Drain cleaning, camera inspection and hydro jetting costs
Drain cleaning costs: which part of the system is blocked?
A blockage in a bathroom sink trap and an obstruction in the main drain are different jobs. The price depends on the access available, the distance the equipment must reach and the method required.
The table includes the service fees identified in the examples used; any excluded charges still need to be checked. Main drain work can cost more even when no pipe is replaced. Another access point, repeated passes or a second method all add work. Clarify the scope of drain clearing and cleaning before comparing two offers.
One useful question is: “Does the price cover only restoring flow, or also cleaning the pipe and checking the result afterward?” Those outcomes may require different equipment or time.
Drain camera inspection costs: what will you receive?
The budget for a camera inspection depends on what is delivered. A video alone, a pre-purchase report, and an inspection of several branches with surface locating are different services. The table’s range covers examples with documentation or locating; it does not automatically include preliminary drain clearing. [4]
Before booking a drain camera inspection, define the expected result:
- the pipe to be inspected and the limits of the examination;
- a usable recording you can keep;
- surface locating, if needed;
- a written report and the important observations;
- the price of preliminary drain clearing if the camera cannot pass.
A camera shows the accessible interior of the pipe. It does not clean the line or correct a defect. A lower-cost inspection may be enough to answer a simple question, while an excavation project or municipal file may require more documentation.
Hydro jetting costs: a standalone service or an add-on?
Hydro jetting and high-pressure drain cleaning may be offered on their own or during a visit already underway. An add-on price is not the price of a separate visit: the service call and some equipment costs may already be covered.
The $700 to $1,000 before-tax reference summarizes two documented configurations, with rounding: standalone cleaning with transport, or a camera inspection with a report and cleaning added during the same visit. The calculation illustrates how inclusions affect the total. It does not guarantee that a long, heavily obstructed or difficult-to-access line can be treated within that budget. [3]
Ask about the planned method, the limits of the work and the final checks included. Compare the total cost of the visit rather than an isolated add-on fee.
Sewer backup costs: separate the plumbing work from damage restoration
The cost of a sewer backup may involve several invoices. Plumbing work addresses the cause and the drainage system. Specialized cleanup, drying and reconstruction of finishes are separate jobs.
Divide the budget into three stages: containing the problem, restoring operation, and correcting the cause if a lasting repair is needed. A drain-clearing price alone cannot establish the cost of a damaged basement. Ask each provider to define what is included.
Leak repair, frozen pipe and plumbing fixture costs
Water leak repair costs: the part is only one item on the bill
The cost of repairing a leak includes more than the fitting or seal being replaced. The table adds the service fee to the repair example used; parts and excluded work still need to be priced. A hidden or intermittent leak may take considerably longer to locate. [2]
For water leak detection and repair, separate the search, necessary access openings, plumbing repair and restoration of the surfaces. A visible leak at an accessible fitting is much easier to describe in an estimate than intermittent moisture behind a wall.
Send an overall photo and a close-up if you can do so safely. Explain when the water appears and which fixtures are being used at that time. This information helps prepare the visit; it does not replace a diagnosis.
Frozen or burst pipes: three budget items to consider
For frozen or burst pipes, the estimate may include locating and thawing the frozen section, repairing a rupture, and addressing exposure to cold. Add any applicable after-hours premium.
The research did not establish a sufficiently precise local range covering all these situations. To keep the budget manageable, ask for an initial authorization limited to the diagnosis and agreed work. Have the next steps confirmed if a rupture or difficult access is discovered. Thawing a pipe and rebuilding a wall should not be combined in an unexplained price.
Toilet, faucet and sink installation costs
For a toilet, the table’s reference covers installation and the service fee identified by the source. It should not be compared directly with a price that includes supplying the toilet. For a faucet, kitchen sink or bathroom sink, also separate the fixture, installation and any connection changes.
Before buying equipment for plumbing fixture installation, have the model checked for dimensions, clearance, connections and compatibility with the existing plumbing. A toilet that does not fit the available space, or an incompatible faucet, can result in a return and a second appointment.
Compare offers covering the same result: removing the old fixture, installing the new one, supplying connection parts, testing and disposing of waste. An estimate that leaves the homeowner to buy the toilet is not directly comparable to a supply-and-install package.
Water heater, sump pump and backwater valve costs
Installed water heater costs: 40 or 60 gallons
The cost of replacing a water heater depends on its capacity, model and the work surrounding the tank. The table presents a basic replacement example after adding the service fee identified by the source. It is not a budget for every installation and does not cap a quote. [2]
Offers for installed 40- and 60-gallon hot water tanks also illustrate seller-specific inclusions, such as delivery, a drain pan, removal and recycling. An offer limited to one model and a particular set of conditions does not become a general rate for every company. [5] [6]
Tight access, stairs, a valve that needs replacing, connection changes or electrical modifications can push the total above a basic replacement range. Have these items checked and priced before relying on a budget. The appliance’s purchase price alone does not establish the installed cost.
For an electric water heater replacement, ask for the exact model, capacity, warranty, draining, handling, drain pan and planned discharge arrangement. Clarify any separate electrical work. HydroSolution notes that changing capacity may require changes to the electrical supply. [10]
If you are comparing buying and renting, use the same time period for both options. Check maintenance, scheduled increases, cancellation terms and buyout conditions. A monthly payment cannot be compared directly with a purchase price.
Sump pump costs: replacement or a new installation?
The cost of an installed sump pump changes considerably depending on whether the existing pit and piping can remain. The selected sources give examples of installed systems from $1,500 to $4,000†, and a system with battery backup from $2,800 to $4,800†. Confirm the scope before comparing them. The total for the system with backup should not be added to the price of the basic system. [7] [18]
For a pump-only replacement, we do not present the purchase price of the equipment as an installed package. The estimate needs to cover the model, travel, installation, connections and testing. A professional-grade pump, new discharge piping or difficult access can change the budget even when the pit already exists.
For a sump pump installation or replacement, have the contractor price what will remain and what will be changed separately. The pit, cover, pipe, fittings, discharge-line check valve and power supply can all affect the scope.
Useful pumping capacity also depends on how high the water must be lifted. A comparison based only on motor horsepower or the pump’s price is therefore incomplete. Ask which model is proposed and what operational testing is included at the end of the work.
For battery backup: clarify whether the offer includes a second pump, controller, charger and battery. Some kits are sold without a battery, including the Basement Watchdog Emergency model reviewed for this guide. Simply adding the kit’s price to that of the primary pump may underestimate the complete system. [11]
Backwater valve installation costs: access makes a major difference
The cost of installing a backwater valve cannot be deduced from the valve’s purchase price. In a finished basement, opening the floor, modifying the pipe and restoring surfaces can represent a substantial part of the budget. A site assessment is more useful than a range that mixes exposed-pipe access with work under a slab. [8]
An estimate for backwater valve installation should distinguish locating the pipe, making openings, installation, permanent maintenance access and restoration. Ask which fixtures will be protected and what the system’s limits are. Montréal emphasizes the importance of access for valve maintenance. [12]
A backwater valve on a sewer pipe and a check valve on a pump discharge line serve different purposes in an estimate. Ask for each component to be identified so you do not compare different installations under the same label.
Water service line replacement and sewer excavation costs
Water service line costs: separate municipal work from a private quote
For the private portion of a lead water service line replaced by the city, Montréal publishes an estimated average of $1,200 to $1,400 per linear metre, including administration fees, based on 2022–2025 data. That figure applies to this specific municipal arrangement. It is not a universal rate for private contractors. [13]
As a calculation example, three metres would represent $3,600 to $4,200 using that historical reference. The city bills according to its rules, the measured length and applicable conditions. Do not multiply this rate to estimate a simple indoor valve repair or an entire service replacement that includes other work.
For a contractor’s water service line repair or replacement, clarify the work limits, method, obstacles, connections and surfaces to be restored. The distinction between public and private portions should be explicit.
Sewer excavation costs: include surface restoration
The published reference of $5,000 to $18,000† concerns excavation and replacement work, depending on depth and access. It illustrates the potential scale of these projects; it does not establish the price of your sewer line or a maximum budget. [4]
In an estimate for sewer line repair with excavation, look for quantities and clear limits: length, estimated depth, machinery access, excavated-material handling, backfill, compaction and affected surfaces.
“Closing the trench” can mean something different from restoring pavers, asphalt, decorative concrete or landscaping. Have the estimate state what will be restored, by whom and when.
The city sets out procedures and varying charges for work on water and sewer service connections. Depending on the borough and project, amounts may be required before work and adjusted afterward. Avoid applying one borough’s fee to all of Montreal. [14]
Residential, renovation and commercial plumbing budgets
Houses, condos and plexes: organize smaller jobs
For residential plumbing, preparing a list before the appointment lets you ask whether several jobs can be combined. Identify each fixture, its model and its problem so the company can plan the parts and time required.
Combining jobs may avoid repeated trips, but it does not guarantee a discount. In a condo or multi-unit building, confirm access to common areas and arrangements for shutting off the water. An appointment where nobody can authorize access may leave the work unfinished.
Bathroom or kitchen renovations: separate the plumbing budget
A complete bathroom budget often includes demolition, electrical work, waterproofing, tile, cabinetry and plumbing. It therefore does not directly answer the question, “How much will the plumbing cost?”
For renovation plumbing, ask for three distinct items: rough-in work, fixture supply, and final connections and testing. Clarify which return visits will be needed after other trades finish their work.
To calculate the plumbing portion, add the agreed labour or flat rate, materials, supplied fixtures, fees and taxes. Identify what remains the responsibility of other trades. An amount that excludes fixtures and wall repairs is not the final bathroom budget.
Before accepting an offer, compare two options if feasible: keeping fixtures in their current locations or moving them. The difference is not limited to the amount of pipe required. Access openings and finishing work may change as well.
Businesses and occupied buildings: account for coordination
The price of commercial plumbing depends on the work, crew and access conditions. A visit for one accessible fixture and work on a shared system should not be reduced to the same flat rate.
Specify the available hours, areas to protect, authorizations and expected tests. Ask for a total for each scheduling option. Working outside opening hours may cost more in plumbing charges while reducing business disruption; the decision then depends on the overall cost to your establishment.
For maintenance, define the frequency and scope: equipment covered, checks, cleaning, reports and excluded repairs. A low-priced contract with limited coverage is not comparable to a visit covering the full system.
How to compare plumbing estimates and reduce unexpected costs
Questions that make two prices comparable
The CMMTQ recommends a detailed estimate and a written contract. The documents should specify equipment, price, taxes, terms and warranties. [15] For your project, also check:
- The result: diagnosis, restored operation, replacement or a complete correction?
- Initial charges: travel, diagnosis and minimum billing, even if no repair is completed?
- Supplies: the exact model, parts and fixtures provided by each party?
- Access: dismantling, openings, handling and authorizations?
- Completion: tests, report, waste removal and surface restoration?
- Unexpected work: who approves an addition, and how is its price confirmed?
A detailed estimate helps identify meaningful differences. One offer may cost more because it includes a better-specified fixture, additional documentation or surface restoration that the other leaves to the owner.
RénoPlex: check assistance before starting
Montréal’s schedule, updated August 18, 2026, includes $1,600 for a new sump pump in a new pit, $600 per normally closed backwater valve installed under an existing slab, and $1,600 per building for a lead water service line, within the applicable eligible work categories. These are grant amounts, not installation prices. [16]
Eligibility depends on the building, program component and technical conditions. The city says to wait for confirmation of acceptance before starting. Check the current program and required documents; do not deduct assistance from your budget until it has been confirmed. [17]
Prepare a useful request for Plomberie Anjou
Gather the address, a few photos, building type, affected fixture, access details and the intended result. For a replacement, include the existing brand and model. For a pipe, attach any available videos or reports so their usefulness can be assessed.
You can send your project details to Plomberie Anjou or call 514 312-1521. The ranges in this guide are not our rates. Before committing, ask for the price applicable to your service, including its scope, fees and exclusions.
Frequently asked questions about plumber costs
Why can a small repair cost several hundred dollars?
A visit may include travel, a minimum labour charge, diagnosis and parts. The time spent replacing the component therefore does not represent the entire service. Ask about the minimum amount payable before the appointment.
Are the prices in this guide Plomberie Anjou’s rates?
No. They are general references drawn from documented examples, together with clearly identified calculation illustrations. They are not a quote or a price promise. The amount for your service must be confirmed directly with Plomberie Anjou, based on the work and applicable conditions.
Should I add drain cleaning and camera inspection prices together?
Only if both are necessary and billed separately. Some packages combine them; others charge an add-on fee. The estimate should distinguish the services and avoid counting a diagnostic step twice when it is already included.
Will supplying my own toilet or faucet save money?
Compare the complete cost with and without the contractor supplying the fixture. Have the model approved before purchase and ask who handles a return, a missing part or the labour needed if the product is defective. A cheaper fixture may lose its price advantage if it requires a second trip.
Should I add an hourly rate to an installed water heater price?
Not for work already included in the package. Check the exclusions instead: difficult access, a connection change, a replacement valve or separate electrical work. Each additional charge should correspond to an explained item.
Is a photo estimate enough for a sump pump or excavation project?
Photos help prepare the discussion. They do not necessarily show dimensions, pipe condition or hidden obstacles. Ask which checks are still needed before a budgeting reference can become an agreed price.
How should I budget for unexpected work?
Start by asking which uncertainties have been identified and how they would be billed. A contingency should reflect the project: concealed access, finishing, a connection to redo or a scope that is not yet known. Agree on approval before additional work instead of giving an open-ended authorization with no amount.
Sources and methodology for the cost ranges
Research reviewed on October 3, 2026. The selected examples concern defined jobs and do not claim to represent every company. Some ranges combine several configurations; they are not average prices and should not be used to label an estimate as overpriced. More complex situations may exceed the stated figures.
For drain clearing, leaks, toilets and water heaters drawn from Malcom’s schedule, the advertised service fee was added before rounding, with exclusions retained. For FlowPro, transport is included, and the combined cleaning example includes the camera inspection and report. The camera-with-locating example uses a complete inspection and its published locating add-on. The hourly illustrations use assumptions chosen to explain the calculation, without attributing those rates to a company.
Not every pricing page clearly states its tax treatment, hence the † symbol. Institutional references explain cost factors, taxes or assistance; they do not validate commercial rates. Only an estimate for your own project can establish the terms offered by Plomberie Anjou.
